After-action review in Slovakia, following 2025 hepatitis A outbreak

5/5ECDC News2026-05-05T14:46+02:00

The outbreak of hepatitis A virus, which peaked in 2025, affected several EU countries, and disproportionately impacted vulnerable groups. These included ethnic minorities, particularly Roma communities in Slovakia and Czechia, people experiencing homelessness, people who use or inject drugs, and people living in poor sanitary conditions.

Suspected hantavirus outbreak on cruise ship under investigation: risk for Europeans very low

5/5ECDC News2026-05-04T19:33+02:00

A cluster of severe acute respiratory illness, including three deaths and one severely ill individual, has been reported among passengers on a cruise ship travelling in the Atlantic and registered in the Netherlands. The ship is currently located off the coast of Cabo Verde, with 149 people on board.

ECDC monitoring outbreak associated with cruise ship

5/5ECDC News2026-05-04T11:42+02:00

ECDC is aware of suspected cases of hantavirus infection, including three deaths, associated with a cruise ship travelling in the Atlantic. ECDC will provide updates as more information becomes available.

Incidence of Bacille Calmette-Guérin associated lymphadenitis in healthy children: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

5/5PubMed Infectious Disease Search2026-05-04T00:00

The pooled incidence proportion was 2.5% (95% CI, 1.6-3.6; I 2 = 99%). A total of 52 peer-reviewed journal articles (about 1.8 million children) were included in meta-analyses. This study highlights substantial variability in the incidence of BCG lymphadenitis among diverse studies and underscores the influence of surveillance methods, study design, and vaccine strain on reported outcomes.

COVID-19 in pediatrics in Latin America: six years later.

5/5PubMed Infectious Disease Search2026-05-04T00:00

Vaccination coverage against COVID-19 in children is suboptimal, particularly among those with high-risk underlying conditions, and the disruption of routine immunization programs has led to outbreaks of vaccine preventable diseases in the region. Addressing these challenges requires strengthening both COVID-19 vaccination strategies for high-risk pediatric populations and routine childhood immunization programs, along with effective communication to combat misinformation, prioritization of educational recovery, social protection, and resilient health systems. This paper is presented as a perspective from SLIPE on COVID-19, providing expert insight into the current epidemiological situation in the region.

Remote Monitoring of Bioelectrical Impedance in Patients With Breast Cancer-Related Lymphedema: 1-Year Pilot Longitudinal Study.

This prospective, patient-driven, 12-month observational study enrolled breast cancer survivors at risk for lymphedema. Longitudinal home-based ECW/TBW measurements were analyzed using linear mixed-effects models to evaluate diurnal differences (before-noon vs after-noon) across groups defined by limb dominance and BCRL status (International Society of Lymphology [ISL] stage 0 vs stage 1). Diurnal analysis identified a small but statistically significant decrease in ECW/TBW ratios in the afternoon (P<.001).
