Cruise ship hantavirus outbreak: ECDC response activated

5/5ECDC NewsGlobal / Maritime2026-05-06T18:39+02:00

The virus has been identified as Andes hantavirus, the only hantavirus which can be transmitted person-to-person, typically requiring close and prolonged contact. ECDC has deployed an expert from the EU Health Task Force to the cruise ship affected by the Andes hantavirus outbreak, as part of a joint effort to investigate the outbreak... An ECDC expert is on the ship to gain more insights and inform public health action', says Dr Pamela Rendi-Wagner.

Major epidemiology studies

NVX-CoV2372, monovalent mRNA and bivalent mRNA vaccines elicit broadly cross-reactive antibodies against emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants.

5/5PubMed Infectious Disease SearchCross-region / unassigned2026-05-05T00:00

A 4th vaccine dose significantly boosted 50% neutralization titers against emerging strain XBB.1.16 by 3.2-, 4.1- and 1.6-fold in monovalent mRNA, bivalent mRNA and NVX-CoV2373 group respectively at day 28. The largest absolute increase in inhibition level at day 28 post-booster was observed against the KP.2 subvariant, with bivalent mRNA vaccines exhibiting the highest neutralization level (91.7%) compared with monovalent mRNA (84.4%; p = .027) and NVX-CoV2373 (81.4%; p < .0001). The geometric mean anti-S fold change (D360/D28) in NVX-CoV2373 group was higher (0.51) relative to both mRNA vaccines (monovalent: 0.31, p = .010 and bivalent: 0.35, p = .017).

Incidence of Bacille Calmette-Guérin associated lymphadenitis in healthy children: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The pooled incidence proportion was 2.5% (95% CI, 1.6-3.6; I 2 = 99%). A total of 52 peer-reviewed journal articles (about 1.8 million children) were included in meta-analyses. This study highlights substantial variability in the incidence of BCG lymphadenitis among diverse studies and underscores the influence of surveillance methods, study design, and vaccine strain on reported outcomes.

Genomic analyses identify nosocomial transmission of ST23 carbapenem-resistant hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae mediated by a conjugative IncFII(K2) NDM-1 plasmid.

Notably, only 4.4% (26/590) of global IncFII K2 plasmids carried bla NDM-1 and all IncFII K2 NDM-1 plasmids maintain conjugative potential. Conjugation assays revealed high transferability (10 -5 for IncFII K2 NDM-1; 10 -4 for IncFII K34 KPC-2). Among 1069 CRKP bloodstream isolates, four ST23-K1 strains (0.37%) were detected across two hospitals, including a nosocomial transmission pair (differing by only 2 core SNPs).
